What Is a Digital Business Card? How It Works, Costs and Benefits
Short answer: A digital business card is an online profile with your contact details, links and socials that you share by tapping an NFC card on a phone, scanning a QR code or sending a link. The other person saves your contact in one tap, with no app. Prices range from free apps to $140 cards; no-subscription NFC cards start at $10.
A digital business card is an online profile with your name, job, contact details, links and social media that you share by tapping an NFC card on a phone, scanning a QR code or sending a link. The person you meet saves your contact in one tap, without installing an app, and you can change your details any time without reprinting anything.
How a digital business card works
There are two parts:
- Your profile page: a mobile web page, for example
card.crestlabs.dev/yourname, with your photo, title, company, phone, email, website, WhatsApp, LinkedIn and other links, plus a Save contact button that downloads a vCard. - A way to open it:
- NFC card: a plastic or metal card with a tiny chip. Hold it near a phone and the profile opens.
- QR code: printed on the back of the card, a flyer, a slide or your shop counter. Any phone camera can scan it.
- Link: sent by WhatsApp, email, LinkedIn or SMS. Good services show a preview with your name and photo.
Because the card only points to a web page, the profile can be updated at any time and the same card keeps working.
NFC vs QR code: which do you need?
| NFC tap | QR code | |
|---|---|---|
| Speed | Fastest: one tap | A few seconds to open the camera |
| Phones | iPhone XR and newer, most Android phones with NFC on | Any phone with a camera |
| Best for | Meeting people in person | Print, screens, events, counters |
The best cards include both, so they work with every phone.
Benefits over paper business cards
- You never run out: one card can be shared thousands of times.
- They land in the phone, not a drawer: “Save contact” adds you straight to their contacts.
- Always up to date: new number or job? Edit the profile; no reprinting.
- More than a phone number: portfolio, booking link, reviews, Google Maps, WhatsApp and socials.
- You can see results: good platforms show views, taps, QR scans and contacts saved.
- Less waste: one durable card replaces hundreds of paper cards.
What does a digital business card cost?
- Free or app-based profiles: often free with limits, or about $3–$8 a month for premium features.
- Big-brand NFC cards: roughly $20–$140 per card, and some add a monthly subscription. See our NFC business card cost guide and best digital business cards compared.
- No-subscription NFC cards: the CrestLabs Digital Business Card is $10 one-time (LKR 3,500 in Sri Lanka), with free shipping, a QR code backup and your own profile dashboard.
How to choose a digital business card
Check these before you buy:
- No app for the receiver. It must open in a normal browser.
- NFC + QR, so every phone can open it.
- One-tap Save contact (vCard), not just a page of links.
- You can edit it yourself, any time, for free.
- Pricing: one-time vs monthly. Add up two years of fees.
- Design control: colours, light/dark mode, your photo and cover image.
- Analytics: at least views, taps and contacts saved.
- Lost-card protection: can you block a lost card instantly?
- Privacy: the service should not sell visitor data.
- Link previews: sharing your link on WhatsApp or LinkedIn should show your name and photo.
Example: the CrestLabs Digital Business Card
The CrestLabs card ticks every box above: NFC + QR, one-tap Save contact, a self-managed dashboard with live preview, 8 accent colours with light and dark designs, analytics, downloadable QR code, lost-card blocking, optional two-factor sign-in and personal link previews, for $10 once with free shipping. Frequently asked questions
What is a digital business card?
An online profile page with your contact details, links and socials that you share by NFC tap, QR code or link. The other person saves your contact in one tap, with no app.
How does an NFC digital business card work?
A chip in the card stores a web link. Hold the card near a phone and the profile opens in the browser. iPhone XR and newer read NFC automatically; most Android phones do when NFC is on. A QR code covers every other phone.
Do people need an app to receive a digital business card?
No. A good digital card opens in the normal browser, and “Save contact” adds you to their phone.
How much does a digital business card cost?
From free apps to about $140 for big-brand cards, sometimes plus a subscription. The CrestLabs card is $10 one-time with free shipping.
Is a digital business card better than a paper one?
For most people, yes: unlimited sharing, saved straight to the phone, always up to date and with links. Many keep a few paper cards as a backup.
Are digital business cards secure?
The NFC card only stores a link, not your data. Pick a service that lets you control what is shown and block a lost card, and that does not sell visitor data.
